I have a tendency to flit all over the place because I can't do just one thing at a time. I call it multitasking, but my husband, several friends, and my co-workers insist on labeling it ADD.
Whatever it is, it lets me read several news, commentary, and blog sites a day. One I just happen to love, still, is The Scott Adams Blog, written by the creator of Dilbert. I love it for articles like yesterday's. Scott found an article published on The Times Online (a UK news site) about some uber-brain in California's Silicon Valley who's found a way to genetically engineer bugs to eat garbage and poop out oil. The company, LS9, is literally taking E. Coli and genetically modifying it to eat waste and excrete petroleum. They call it, Designer Biofuel.
Holy Crap! Can I even say 'crap' on the company blog? I dare say it again - Holy Crap!
Apparently LS9's idea has enough legs to attract former Shell Oil executive Bob Walsh to be its President. But they have a long way to go. It takes a lot of these little suckers to create enough oil to refine into fuel for a car. They estimate it would take a plant the size of the city of Chicago to create enough bug-poop-fuel to replace our country's current weekly consumption, but at around $50 a barrel, not the $140 we're being gouged with by OPEC. That's a lot of crap. And it's carbon neutral crap, to boot. Maybe they're on to something...
